Andrew Stawarz - Artist Study

Andrew Stawarz

Andrew Stawarz is a long exposure photographer who photographs urban scenes in England creating colourful images of buildings and dull objects. His use of light to do this is what interests me, as he often uses the sky and its colours to contrast the metal/concrete buildings in the foreground. He also has long exposure photos of landscapes that create starbursts and very crisp, still images.

Analysis

'Night Sky over Clare and Kings'

I like the way the still water reflects the colours in the sky and how these colours are exaggerated by the longer exposure which allows for more of the light from the sky to enter. The exposure also causes the streetlights on the ground to create the interesting starbursts.

I had a go at recreating images like this at a marina at sunset, where the sun was low, and there was water to reflect the sky.

Here I made the most of the sky that held 3 colours, and set the exposure to 10 seconds, so that the boats would contrast the background, and the colours in the sky would not be too bright or over-exposed.

I also wanted to create the starbursts where the lights were, so I experimented with different exposures to create the crisp effect, moreso than in Stawarz's photo.

'Racing Stars'

I have found lots of photos with star trails very interesting because of the vast amount of time put into one photo, which is justified by the length of these trails. It is also interesting to see how the stars move, as it isn't obvious to the naked eye.
