Vaporetto to St Mark's Square

St Mark's Square

We boarded the Vaporetto and travelled the full length of the Grand Canal. Here was an opportunity to take lots of photos of the amazing architecture with a busy canal in the foreground.

St Mark's Campanile, St Mark's Square + Basilica

Photos

As my project is largely based on miniature objects, I found that a lot of my photos taken from up in the Campanile were very useful, as I could apply tilt-shift effects onto them to make the buildings and people look like tiny models. Here are the photos that have had a tilt shift effect applied onto them:

I loved the outcome of these tilt-shift style photos, however, if I could go back, I would do tilt-shift style time lapses of the same views. Moreover, I would have liked to use an actual tilt-shift lens for a more natural and real effect rather than a Photoshop effect. In the last photo, I think that the tilt-shift really enhances and captures the contrast of the amounts of people along the sidewalk, as there are lots of people in the area in focus, but less people further away, and more greenery as it blurs into the distance; almost as if to show the business contrasting with the peaceful, quieter place in the distance.

With the edited images, I adjusted contrast, vibrancy and curves layers to adjust the colours in the images, and I also manually made layers of colour with a 'Soft Light' blending mode soft-edged brush to create the light leaks, enhance colours/glows, and exaggerate fog. I used gradient maps to also add colourful interest to some of the photos.
