Caspar David Friedrich - Artist Study
Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich was a 19th Century Romantic painter from Germany. A lot of his paintings feature atmosphere, being known particularly for his 'morning mists' and allegorical landscapes. Similar to Turner and Martin, all these painters influenced/were influenced by each other, and many of them were not popular at the time. Friedrich only regained popularity and was recognised as a key part of the Romantic Period in the 1970s, a long time after his death. Mood is of high importance in his paintings, which is also significant in most Romantic-style paintings and atmospheric paintings.
I did not like all of his works; I found some were too dull and did not feature much atmosphere, but because Friedrich's work has such a large variety, I was able to find enough to find a good amount of inspiration. I found that in a lot of his works, the colours are not vibrant; the overall paintings have less contrast in them, which creates a more atmospheric and hazy environment.
This painting features few subjects, surrounded by thick fog, with dull grey and brown colours. I particularly like the central focus of the image, with the sides being ambiguous, faded and foggy. I'd like to use this style of composition in some of my images, and also using the idea of these colours to convey more emotion, rather than leaving the colours as they are.
