Miniature Photography (in the style of Slinkachu)

After looking at Slinkachu's work, I decided to have a go at photographing some similar scenes to his. Here are various images I created:

Photo 1: Rock Police

I used some lego figures and vehicles to set up this scene. The pebbles/rocks have been spilled onto the road, and the lego figures are picking them up and putting them on a truck. I made sure that there were lots of pebbles in the truck, rather than the truck being empty. I also tried to make it look like a disaster scene setup, as if it were in real life. I used a macro lens to get really close up, and this enhances the large background blur, that the sea of rocks fades into.

The close-up brings out much of the detail in the rocks and pavement, that humans would normally disregard. It also holds another message, that no one is really there to clean up the small things that are spilled, but overlooked by us.

Photo 2: Vegetable Fishing

I came across some sliced carrots in a bowl, and saw that there were pieces of frost on them, and a few were sticking out above the water, appearing to be an island surrounded by water. I thought it would be perfect for this project, and I found a Lego figure with a hood on its head, and a fishing rod. I placed it on the carrots, and here is the result:

The difficulty was that the bowl's rim got in the way when I wanted to take a photo from a lower perspective, but a higher perspective would be the same as what a human would see; I wanted it to be different to what a person would normally see, so I went to the lowest angle I could without the bowl's rim interfering.

I chose this image out of the ones below because it was most in focus, I liked the interesting light bokeh in the background, the rule of thirds applied and it shows everything I wanted to show: the frost on the carrots, the water, and the person fishing.

In Photoshop I added warmth to the photo by increasing the Reds in a Curves adjustment layer, and I added brightness to the image in general, to enhance the carrots and to reduce the image's contrast slightly.

Photo 3: iPad Musician

Inspired again by Slinkachu, I put this guitar-playing Lego figure onto an iPad with the music app open in the background. I used the iPad as the main source of light, with an ambient white/blue light in the background to give an exciting atmosphere.

I used a macro lens to really focus on the object, but still allow enough light in as there wasn't much light in the scene. I wanted the vibrant colours on the figure to stand out, so I chose a background image with bright vivid colours to enhance this.

I edited the Curves layers on this photo: increasing reds and blues slightly, and then removing a little contrast to make the image have more of an atmosphere in the background blur. The lighting from below also adds a stage effect, purporting the iPad to be its stage.
