Galen Rowell was a famous landscape photographer. I particularly like his coastal/water landscapes because I think he has a unique way of capturing water in his images; the water stands out yet remains subtle at the same time.

Rowell was born in 1940 in California, and died in 2002. He was a climber and a photographer, both of which worked extremely well together in his career. He has had work published in many big magazines including National Geographic, and has also produced photography books himself.

I have picked a few pieces that really stood out to me. Initially he used film but moved to more digital methods later on in his life.

I like the use of long exposure to give the water a calmer look. Also the colours are at a good saturation level, with the image being largely blue.

This image caught my eye because of the vibrant autumn leaves juxtaposed against the vibrant blue sky. I liked that the leaves floating on the water matched the colours in the foliage, and the reflections in the water are crisp and defined.

Another long exposure image, but this time the image is less busy. I like how Rowell has composed the image so that the bottom half is smooth and blurred, and the top half is well-defined.

A great feautre of Rowell's photos are the locations combined with the right time of day. This is an example of that; the lighting in the sky is incredible and is heavily complimented by the foreground water and landscape.
